“For You bestow on him blessings forever; You make him glad with the joy of Your presence.” (Ps 21:7)
Few national anthems move me as much as our own. How many others do you know that are a prayer? We don’t proclaim our greatness before other nations; we proclaim our yearning before God: “Nkosi Sikelel’.” Lord, bless us. Bless our leaders. Bless our people. Bless our continent. Without You, we are nothing!
The “Royal Psalms” (of which Psalms 20 and 21 are examples) were prayers sung by the people at the king’s coronation. Seven times in Psalm 20, we find the words, “May the LORD…” Six of these wishes (Ps 20:1-6) focus on one thing: may the LORD answer the king’s prayers. The seventh desire reflects the people’s longing: “May the LORD answer us when we call” (v10). Psalm 21 continues, testifying of God’s faithfulness: “You have granted him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. You welcomed him with rich blessings” (Ps 21:3-4).
Yahweh, our LORD, is a faithful LORD. Our enemies tremble, for God is in control.
For me, the Royal Psalms are like the prelude to the Grand Finale. The drums begin to beat, anticipation rises, and everyone stands. As the sun rises, the King of kings, Lord of lords, ascends His holy throne: “far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come” (Eph 1:21).
Yahweh, our LORD, is a faithful LORD. The enemy trembles, for God is in control.
PRAYER: Your reign will expand, and You will bring peace and prosperity forever (Isa 9:6).
