According to Jewish tradition, Jesus and His disciples would have sung Psalm 118 on their journey to Jerusalem and during the Passover meal. The refrain of Psalm 118 would have been repeated: “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His steadfast love endures forever.” During Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the crowd even quoted Psalm 118 while singing. At one point, Jesus shared the parable of the farmer who planted a vineyard, but the local tenants became jealous and killed all his servants. Even the heir of the farmer was killed! Jesus then quoted Psalm 118:22 with no ambiguity about whom He referred to: Himself! (See Matt 21:42; Mark 12:10-11, and Luke 20:17). Right then, the chief priests and Pharisees began plotting to capture Jesus, as the people regarded Him as a prophet. But Jesus was more than just a prophet. Jesus was the Messiah!
When Peter and John were brought before the Jewish Council, Peter also quoted Psalm 118:22 in his defense, testifying that Jesus was the true Messiah: “Salvation is found in no one else” (Acts 4:12). The Jewish Council, amazed at their faith, commanded them not to speak about Jesus again. Peter and John replied: “You decide whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than to Him. As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:18-20).
You either believe, or you don’t. But if you believe, you cannot stay silent. You won’t want to. It is impossible.
PRAYER: Centuries later, I also believe, Lord. You are the cornerstone of my life. This alone is my testimony.
