#Job 9: Silence is sometimes truly the best

Satan has disappeared from the scene. Three new names appear on the stage: Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. They come from afar to comfort their friend, but how do you comfort someone when the pain is too heavy? For seven days, they sit with Job, silent (Job 2:11-13). And then Job begins (in Chapter 3): Why? Why? Six times: why? Life has lost all meaning for him!

Don’t you also want to cry when you read this chapter? I do! I want to cry for every woman, man, and child who must take refuge in bomb shelters. I want to cry for every parent who has to retrieve the lifeless body of their child from the rubble. I want to cry for the mutilated animals. I cry for the displaced people. For the people with death in their eyes. How many more “whys” must we ask?

Perhaps Job’s friends should have just remained silent. But don’t we all know how our well-intentioned advice sometimes cuts deeper than the sharpest blade? This is what Eliphaz does with Job: you must be the guilty party, Job! What has happened to you is of your own doing. “Misery does not come from the earth, nor does suffering spring from the ground,” Eliphaz continues (5:6). “Do not despise the discipline of the Almighty” (v17).

What Eliphaz says sounds so beautiful: “He wounds, but He binds up; He strikes, but His hands heal” (v18). But with this, Eliphaz implies that God is behind the pain. God is the one who causes all our suffering. And that’s simply not true!

Thank goodness Job did not want to accept this advice! Such counsel drives people away from God rather than into God’s arms.

PRAYER: I know that You heal, Lord, even though it’s not You who inflicts the wounds.

From the lyrics…
Daar’s niks so sterk soos ’n vrou
Daar’s niks so sterk soos ’n vrou
Daar’s niks so sterk soos ’n vrou
Daar’s niks so sterk soos ’n vrou
