#Job 15: The Grace of Suffering

Step back for a moment and let us first reconsider what Job’s friends had to say in response to his suffering. Clearly, Job (or his children) must have done something terribly wrong in the eyes of the Lord—knowingly or unknowingly! And each time, Job’s response remained the same: “Tell me where I have gone wrong” (6:24).

For Job, the conclusion becomes obvious: “It’s all the same really… whether a person is guilty or innocent, God destroys you anyway” (9:22). This makes me wonder, did God make a mistake in His conversation with Satan? If enough problems arise, will Job (or we) eventually turn against God? Listen to his harsh words: “When a sudden flood brings death, God laughs at the despair of the innocent” (9:23). It sounds so severe, but isn’t that what we wonder when we see the misery of people around us? Isn’t Job merely voicing aloud what we quietly think?

A phrase from C.S. Lewis comes to mind: “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” And this is precisely Elihu’s entire argument: we come to know God not just in the beautiful moments of life but also in the sorrowful times. Suffering can even be meaningful, even if it makes no sense!

What I learn from Job’s conversation with Elihu is that the good in life is no better than the bad in life. In both, God is equally present. After all, nothing can separate us from the love of God (as stated in Romans 8:35).

PRAYER: Grant that I may trust You just as much in bad times as in good times, because You love me.

MUSIC:

Today, we listen to “Shattered: Purpose Through the Pain” by Tracyann Martin.

From the lyrics:

I kneel down in the silence, shattered and torn,
Echoes of regret like a relentless storm.
Every word of rejection, every look of disdain,
I cry out to You, Lord, feeling lost in my pain.
In the depths of my despair, Your whisper cuts through,
“My child, your path is carved in every scar you view.”
Purpose through the pain, Your plan hidden in the tears,
In every cry I’ve voiced, Your love draws ever near.
Though the night feels endless, Your light will lead me on,
In every wound and heartache, Your purpose will be done.
