#30 FEARLESS INNOVATIVE

Tomorrow we begin with a brand-new series. This month’s theme literally presented itself “along the way” – on a bookshelf at a roadside stall. I bought the book (“The Great Promise Book” written by Annes Nel), knowing that it would also be the name of the new series: #PROMISES. On the title page was a quote: “We believe that the future belongs to God and that God’s promises will be fulfilled more surprisingly than we can dream.” The book is a collection of promises (one for each day of the year), but what really motivated me to buy the book was the excellent explanation of how to understand the promises of the Bible. And it’s not that simple…

Some promises are not meant for us; some promises have already been fulfilled; some promises include conditions (“If you… Then I will…”). Some promises contradict one another; some sound too good to be true – think of Jesus’ promises: “If you remain in Me and My words in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given to you” (John 15:7). There are promises of wealth, prosperity, and protection that many prosperity preachers claim (and if it doesn’t materialise in your life, it’s because you don’t trust enough. Or so they say…) And I could go on.

The Bible could easily be called God’s Book of Promises. We learn about God’s nature through God’s promises, and therefore, God’s promises become our confessions of faith. As the great American evangelist of the previous centuries, Dwight Moody, reminded us: “God makes a promise; in faith we believe it, in hope we expect it, and with patience, we look forward to it.”

PRAYER: You are the faithful God, the One who forgets none of Your promises. Strengthen my faith so that it matches my confession.

MUSIC: We look at the lyric video of “Golden Promise” by Nederland Zingt.

From the lyrics:

Heer, U beloofde niet
een zon die altijd schijnt.
Heer, U beloofde niet
een kalme zee
en U beloofde niet
een leven zonder strijd,
maar U beloofde wel:
‘K ga met je mee.

Heer, U beloofde niet
dat zorg ons blijft bespaard.
Heer, U beloofde niet:
er vloeit geen traan,
maar U beloofde wel:
je blijft Mij alles waard.
Ik zal steeds naast je gaan,
heel jouw bestaan.

Gouden belofte
waar wij op bouwen.
Bij voor- of tegenspoed
uiteindelijk komt het goed.
Daarom volgen wij
de roepstem van de Heer.
Hij is steeds met ons, Immanuël.

Nee, wij beloven niet
nooit in de fout te gaan
of nooit te twijfelen, Heer,
aan uw plan,
maar wij beloven wel
van U te houden, Heer
en U te dienen ons leven lang.

Gouden belofte
waar wij op bouwen.
Bij voor- of tegenspoed
uiteindelijk komt het goed.
Daarom volgen wij
de roepstem van de Heer.
Hij is steeds met ons, Immanuël.

Gouden belofte
waar wij op bouwen.
Bij voor- of tegenspoed
uiteindelijk komt het goed.
Daarom volgen wij
de roepstem van de Heer.
Hij is steeds met ons, Immanuël.
Hij is steeds met ons, Immanuël.
Zijn belofte is: Immanuël.
